play to the beat of your own drum

there is a little gem on 22nd & michigan. it was introduced to me by mark hetzel, a friend & aspiring gifted photographer a few months back. fred anderson, the voice behind the famous velvet lounge, recently died this spring. mark & i decided to document some of the players; those that keep it running today, along with the dedicated staff. please keep it alive by supporting it … experimental jazz that makes you vibrate…

"The Velet Lounge is one of those places where they were able to play their craft, feel confident in what they were doing, and play their own music in thier own way. So I think that should be my legacy. It will be going on for generations and generations." -fred anderson

thank you mark for introducing me to this & for teaching me to see a little different with my ears.

is one hell of a man. i have not met this gentleman, but very much look forward to meeting him when i visit The Maze in Brasil for Our World Insideout. This video tells a little bit about the life bob has made for himself, in a favela in Rio. he also comments on a trend in history. often there are places on earth people wouldn't dare live, but now pay top dollar to move into … when i first moved to chicago, i chose to live in a neighborhood that is known as being the most densely populated with halfway houses in the united states. at one point someone pulled a gun and shot at another, right in front of me. this happens all over the place – but without people like bob to help tame the waters, make neighborhoods safer for others to live & work, there wouldn't be this demand he is speaking of. this is why i chose to join two words into one : "insideout" – there is no delineation between what goes on inside or outside of our homes. we are all connected, and cheers to bob for showing his neighbors of Rio & the rest of the world it is possible to make a change for the better, in some of the most unlikely of places. you can come celebrate him & his neighbors – The Maze is a hotel and Jazz venue:)

happy fun friday!

there are those moments when all sights, sounds, and tastes flow in a rhythm, synchronized in beauty.

while standing in an amazing book store that came up as a gallery in chelsea ny, on my yelp iphone app, i found myself in this moment. the taste factor may have been somewhat absent, however the smell of paper was enough to intoxicate my love glands…is that possible? conor and i had made our way into printed matter : a book store that houses artists' publications along with a few old posters. to top off the bizarre & beautiful scavenger hunt i was going through in this store/gallery, my ears tuned into the music playing on the boom box – it quickly shazamed it to find out it was a record released just a week prior. it wasn't until tonight, while working to it that conor said "i swear this is by someone at animal collective," so i took a look. black noise, by panta du prince, happens to be an album by a german dj who collaborates with Noah Lennox of Animal Collective, Tyler Pope of !!! & LCD Soundsystem. i am a huge fan of animal collective and LCD Soundsystem, so it's no surprise that this is the case. like many, there are so many genres of music i adore, but this is a new release that i think is great to crank away to – whether it's working, driving, meditating to, etc…and to let you know about. enjoy.

i'm in production hell for the december show (we'll it's not really that bad, i'm just stuck inside rather than enjoying the world!) but this is a reminder to have a little fun this weekend – that means you & me. t h a n k y o u  my dear friend thereza for passing this on to me a few weeks back… i adore this kind of public work (& it makes me miss having a piano around to play & my 1973 pink super beetle!). enjoy.
