silver award in paris

Posted on: June 22nd, 2011 by alyssa miserendino No Comments

i am crying. i guess i didn't realize how much my heart is in this work. i'm incredibly honored. Our World Insideout : Brazil has been awarded a silver in this years px3 competition. i may just be on my way to france soon!

"Px3 asked each judge to use the same criteria when reviewing the photographs: originality, creativity, excellence of execution, and overall impact. The identity of all photographers is not shown during the voting process to insure fairness and the integrity of the competition."

thank you dearly to all of you who supporter me via Kickstarter, & to those from around the US, Central America and all over Brazil that made this possible. my dreams just got bigger, and very much because of you….

Our World Insideout is currently working in conjunction with a Rio based organization, Chiq da Silva, to project the imagery on the side of the most popular squatted government building. The goal is to raise awareness & the necessary funds to finally build the first centralized urban public housing in Rio. In addition the documentary is in it's final stage of subtitling!!! thank you Isabela Alzuguir!

Spread the word. If you'd like to be involved, with the Chicago portion, I am currently looking for a story to cover & submit to two editors. I am excited to work towards awareness & change in my own hometown. Please contact me here if you have a story to share: alyssa@ourworldinsideout.com

i’m tickled pink to share this… & incredibly thankful for those who had a hand in creating this. it is by far the most beautiful, questionable, sour & meaningful creation of my very young career – it is overflowing with emotion. this is close to my heart – please watch if you have a moment.

contacted me one evening in december regarding Our World Insideout. She had recently written an article on the project, on M.U.D., about projects being funded by kickstarer. Our World Insideout was one of five that she highlighted. in hind sight, i realize i was sent an angel. without her, Our World Insideout Brazil, would not have been possible.

isabela is a phenomenally talented screenwritter – and at such a young age – her potental is exciting. she approached me asking if she could help with any logistics & produce a documentary on the work i was doing while in brazil. (i told you she was an angel i was sent!) for the next three months, isabela and i communicated through google & skype (thank you technology) & produced a plan of attack for people & places to approach, film & photograph. most importantly, we were planning a journey that really wouldn't take form until we were in the thick of it. isabela, single handly arranged a group of incredible talented people to help with the filming, audio recording, and management of the production while i was in Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo.

today, she continues to work on three projects, and is constantly being hired for bigger & better projects. she continues to work on this project, regardless of her hectic schedule. she asked Charlie Romijin, a successful UK musician, who plays on Though Forms & works on projects with the members of Mogwai, to write an incredible sound track for the documentary – which I am in love with. t h a n k  y o u  Charlie! I'm eagerly awaiting to see the audio track take form as a collaboration, also with Jerome Bogaerts. he has composed soundtracks for previous documentaries of isabela's & works as a sound designer/FX editor at Globo TV

i shared some incredible experiences with isabela, including just enjoying our time together outside of the project's demands. i look forward to sharing part of that journey with you too! i do wish we lived a little closer to share with each other in person. but one thing is for sure – i look forward to watching her career grow, & look forward to the day i get to hang out with her again. i do miss her!

t h a n k  y o u isabela!

Our World Insideout : brazil 2010

Posted on: June 11th, 2010 by alyssa miserendino 2 Comments

It's been a long journey since i have returned from Brazil – with more than i can chew at times. but going through the following first batch of film images has made me happy to continue on with this unknown journey of sorts & reliving the experiences. there has been a lot to take in. i have been shocked back into the comfort/uncomfortness of my home. it is a daily reminder that there is so much to see, experience, and live with others in this world. in fact, in all honesty, i walked into our home almost in tears upon my return. i wanted all our things to go away, to return to Brazil & spend just one night in an anarchist moment, or favela. i realized this was the one thing i missed out on, the moment i boarded the plane to chicago.

in chicago, i am saddened by people not looking me in the eye when walking down the street (with the exception of a few). i terribly missed passing strangers saying good morning, good afternoon, & good evening randomly on the street, in the supermarket, a coffee shop etc. it's said to just about ever individual you encounter, everyday. i was surrounded by such positive energy by how people just lived -together- in communites, beating more than one drum at a time, but the rhythm all culminating at once in its chaos, in the unlikeliness of places.

The Sem Teto has created their strength in numbers. This is where they live. This is where they create their community. This is where they eat, sleep & live together, in every sense of the word.

This is what they call home.
